The Abbey Theatre opens Henrik Ibsen’s celebrated play Hedda Gabler in a new version by Mark O’Rowe on Wednesday, 15 April 2015.
Mark O’Rowe applies his play writing talents and keen instinct for dialogue to adapting this intriguing psychological thriller. He collaborates with Director Annabelle Comyn who, with characteristic energy and flair, brings us a new interpretation of Hedda Gabler for a contemporary audience.
The earliest theatrical performance of Hedda Gabler took place at the Residenz Theater in Munich on 31 January 1891, with playwright Henrik Ibsen in attendance.
There have been numerous productions and revivals of Hedda Gabler worldwide, particularly in Scandinavia and Germany, where it has always ranked among Ibsen’s most popular works. Its enduring appeal has not dwindled over time and Ibsen is ranked as the most frequently performed playwright in the world after Shakespeare.
